One of the best things about visiting New Zealand’s beaches is the variety. You can spend one day relaxing beside a peaceful bay and the next exploring volcanic sand, huge dunes or unusual rock formations.

1) Cathedral Cove, Coromandel

Cathedral Cove is one of the most popular coastal spots in New Zealand. Located on the Coromandel Peninsula, it is famous for its large natural rock arch, sandy beach and clear blue-green water.

The surrounding coastline makes the experience even more memorable. Cliffs rise around the beach, while native vegetation gives the area a raw New Zealand feel (you know💁‍♂️). It is an excellent place for taking photographs or simply enjoying one of the country’s most scenic coastal landscapes.

  • Location: Coromandel Peninsula, North Island
  • What to see: Natural rock arch, sandy beach, cliffs and clear coastal waters
  • Things to do: Kayaking, sightseeing, photography and swimming when conditions are suitable
  • Best time to visit: December to February

2) Piha Beach, Auckland

If you want to see a completely different side of New Zealand’s coastline, visit Piha Beach. It is located on Auckland’s west coast, and known for its striking black volcanic sand and rugged surroundings.

The enormous Lion Rock is the beach’s most recognisable feature and gives the coastline a dramatic appearance. Piha is also well known among surfers, although the ocean can be rough and swimming requires caution.

For visitors staying in Auckland, Piha could be a good place to chill, away from the busy city life.

  • Location: West Auckland, North Island
  • What to see: Black sand, Lion Rock, cliffs and surrounding native bush
  • Things to do: Surfing, walking, photography and sightseeing
  • Best time to visit: December to February
  • Best for: Surfers, photographers and adventure seekers

3) Ninety Mile Beach, Northland

Despite its name, Ninety Mile Beach isn’t actually 90 miles long (haha how funny😐). The coastline stretches for around 88 kilometres, creating one of the most impressive open beach landscapes in New Zealand.

Located in the far north of the country, the beach feels remarkably vast. Huge sand dunes, wide-open horizons and spectacular sunsets make it especially appealing to photographers and road-trip travelers.

The surrounding Far North region also offers plenty of ways to explore beyond the beach, making it a worthwhile stop on a Northland New Zealand itinerary.

  • Location: Aupōuri Peninsula, Northland, North Island
  • What to see: Vast coastline, sand dunes and sunsets
  • Things to do: Walking, sightseeing, fishing and sand-based activities
  • Best time to visit: December to March
  • Best for: Road trips, photography and outdoor adventures

4) Hot Water Beach, Coromandel

Hot Water Beach offers an experience that is very different from a typical day at the seaside. At certain times around low tide, naturally heated water rises through the sand, allowing visitors to dig their own temporary hot pools.

The geothermal activity beneath the beach is what makes this place so unusual. Visitors often arrive with small shovels, find a suitable area of sand and create a warm pool where they can sit and enjoy the ocean nearby.

Because the experience depends heavily on the tide, pre planning your visit around the right low-tide period is actually important.

  • Location: Coromandel Peninsula, North Island
  • What to see: Geothermal hot-water areas beneath the sand
  • Things to do: Dig a hot pool, relax and explore the coastline
  • Best time to visit: December to February, around suitable low tides
  • Best for: Families, couples and travellers looking for something unusual

5) Beaches of Abel Tasman National Park

For travellers who don’t want to choose just one beach, Abel Tasman National Park is an excellent option. The park is famous for its golden beaches, sheltered bays, clear water and forest-covered coastline.

Anchorage Bay, Torrent Bay and Awaroa are among the better-known coastal spots. Here you can spend time on the beach with hiking or kayaking and experience several different parts of the coastline during the same trip.

  • Location: Nelson Tasman, South Island
  • What to see: Golden beaches, forest, turquoise water and secluded bays
  • Things to do: Hiking, kayaking, swimming and camping
  • Best time to visit: December to March

Wharariki Beach is the kind of place that feels far removed from the busy tourist attractions found elsewhere in New Zealand. Located near the northern tip of the South Island, it features huge sand dunes, dramatic rock formations, caves and small offshore islands.

The beach is particularly impressive around sunrise and sunset, when changing light creates completely different views of the rocks, sand and ocean.

  • What to see: Sand dunes, rock formations, caves and offshore islands
  • Things to do: Walking, photography and exploring the coastline
  • Best time to visit: December to March

You can spend the day by the water and then explore the surrounding cafés, restaurants and shops. For travelers who enjoy walking, the tracks around Mauao also provide excellent views over the coastline and Bay of Plenty.

The combination of beach, town and mountain makes Mount Maunganui one of the more versatile beach destinations in New Zealand.

Best Time to Visit New Zealand Beaches

For a traditional beach holiday, December to February is generally the most popular period to visit New Zealand. These months fall during the country’s summer and are usually the most suitable for activities such as swimming, kayaking, hiking and spending long days outdoors.

That doesn’t mean summer is the only good time to visit. March and April can be appealing if you prefer cooler weather and a quieter atmosphere. During the cooler months, New Zealand’s beaches also take on a completely different character, particularly on the more rugged sections of coastline.

Weather conditions can vary significantly across the country, so it’s always worth checking the local forecast before heading to the beach.
