What is the Japan Postal Code Finder?

This is a free tool for finding Japanese postal codes (郵便番号, yūbin bangō). It includes around 120,000 postal code records from Japan Post's public data, covering every prefecture from Hokkaido to Okinawa. Look up the code for a town, ward or neighbourhood, or enter a code to see where it points. Place names work in English (romaji) and Japanese.

It helps with online shopping, international shipping, hotel bookings, visa and residence forms, and any website that asks for a Japanese address.

How to find a Japan zip code

  1. Place to code: choose “Place → Code”, type a place such as Shibuya, Gion or 浅草, and optionally narrow it with the prefecture menu.
  2. Code to place: choose “Code → Place” and type a full code like 150-0002, or the first digits like 150 to list every match.
  3. Copy the code, or open the area on a map to check it.

How Japanese postal codes work

A Japan postal code has seven digits, written with the 〒 mark and a hyphen: 〒100-0005. The seven-digit system began nationwide in 1998, replacing an older three- or five-digit format.

Reading the digits

The first three digits point to a broad delivery area and the last four narrow it to a town, block or large building. Codes broadly run from north to south: 0xx covers Hokkaido, 1xx is Tokyo, 5xx is Osaka, 6xx is Kyoto and 9xx reaches Kyushu and Okinawa.

Writing a Japanese address

In Japan the postal code comes first, then prefecture, city, ward and street. On overseas forms, write the code as 100-0005 and keep the hyphen.
