How Indian pincodes work

PIN stands for Postal Index Number. India Post introduced the six-digit PIN code on 15 August 1972 to make sorting mail easier, and each pincode has exactly six digits with no hyphen or letters, for example 110001.

Reading the digits

The first digit points to a postal region: 1 is Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Chandigarh, 2 is Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, 3 is Rajasthan, Gujarat and Daman and Diu, 4 is Maharashtra, Goa, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, 5 is Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka, 6 is Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Lakshadweep, 7 is West Bengal, Odisha and the north-east, and 8 is Bihar and Jharkhand. The first two digits show the sub-region, the first three show the sorting district, and the last three identify the delivery post office. A first digit of 9 is reserved for the Army Postal Service.

One pincode, many places

A pincode usually covers several villages, localities or branch post offices. That is why searching a pincode can list many places, and why a locality name can share its pincode with its neighbours.

Writing an Indian address

The usual order is house or building, street, locality, city or district and state, then the pincode, for example: 12 Example Road, Connaught Place, New Delhi, Delhi 110001.
