What is the Australia Postcode Finder?

This is a free tool for finding Australian postcodes. Search a suburb or town to get its 4-digit postcode, or enter a postcode to see every suburb that uses it. It covers all eight states and territories, from New South Wales to the Northern Territory.

It helps with online shopping, parcel delivery, visa and migration forms, job and university applications, and any website or form that asks for an Australian address.

How to find an Australian postcode

  1. Suburb to postcode: choose “Suburb → Postcode”, type a suburb such as Bondi, Fremantle or Carlton, and optionally narrow it with the state menu.
  2. Postcode to suburbs: choose “Postcode → Suburbs” and type a full postcode like 2000, or the first digits like 30 to list every match.
  3. Copy the postcode, or open the area on a map to check it.

How Australian postcodes work

An Australian postcode has four digits, for example 2000 for Sydney. There is no hyphen or letter. Postcodes are managed by Australia Post and are used to sort mail.

Reading the digits

The first digit points to a state or territory. Broadly: 2 is New South Wales (and the ACT), 3 is Victoria, 4 is Queensland, 5 is South Australia, 6 is Western Australia, 7 is Tasmania, and 0 is the Northern Territory. The ACT uses some 26xx and 29xx codes inside the 2 range. Codes beginning with 0 keep their leading zero, for example 0800 for Darwin.

Suburbs and postcodes

A postcode can cover several suburbs, and a large suburb can have more than one postcode. That is why searching a postcode can return many suburbs.

Writing an Australian address

The usual order is unit and street, then the suburb in capitals, the state abbreviation and the postcode, for example: 1 Example Street, BONDI NSW 2026.

Australia postcode FAQ

How many digits is an Australian postcode?

Four digits with no hyphen or letters, for example 2000. Codes that start with 0 keep the zero.

How do I find a postcode in Australia?

Type the suburb or town into the finder. Choose a state to narrow the list if several suburbs share a name.

Does the first digit show the state?

Broadly yes: 2 is NSW and the ACT, 3 Victoria, 4 Queensland, 5 South Australia, 6 Western Australia, 7 Tasmania and 0 the Northern Territory. There are exceptions, such as the ACT codes inside the 2 range.

Can one suburb have more than one postcode?

Yes. Large suburbs can be split across postcodes, and one postcode can cover several suburbs. Check the exact street with Australia Post if it matters.

Does it include every Australian postcode?

It covers suburbs and localities (about 3,100 postcodes). PO Box, large-volume receiver and street-level codes are not included, so use the Australia Post postcode search to confirm a specific address.

Is this the official Australia Post website?

No. This is an independent tool and is not affiliated with Australia Post. See our Disclaimer.
